You want to start your own game server? You will probably need game hosting. In this post, I’ll explain the options you have for game hosting and what option is best.
What is game hosting?
Game hosting is hosting for gaming servers. All online games use game servers, and some give you the option to host your own game servers.
The options that you have for game hosting generally depends on the game that you want to host the server for. For some games, you can host a game server on just about any server. For others, you need a specialized server (which could be more expensive).
A VPS can do a lot
With many games, you can host a game server with a VPS. This is pretty cool since you might already have a VPS for web hosting. It does require some experience, though.
Depending on the game, you will need different specifications. Some game servers will require Linux or a Unix-based operating system, while others might require Windows. Some may require dedicated resources – you don’t want to be doing much else with that server.
Game specific hosting
If a VPS isn’t available, or whatever game you want to host a server with requires special resources, you can get with game specific hosting.
Just do a Google search on “[your game] game server” (for example: “call of duty game server” will get you information on hosting a Call Of Duty game server).
The information and resources varies widely from game to game. For some games, you will find hosts that provide exactly what you need. They could say something like “$5/mo CounterStrike Server”. For other games, you will only find directions to start a server. You will then need to find a server (maybe a VPS) that you can start the game server on.
